Passport interviews

Some applications need an identity interview. GOV.UK describes them as video interviews held online.

What we can confirm

On its page for replacing an adult passport, GOV.UK says video interviews are held online and that, if one is needed, you will be contacted after your application is processed to book it.

The first-passport and renewal pages we checked do not say who will be asked for an interview or what is asked, so we do not guess. The application itself, or HM Passport Office, will tell you if you need one.

Prepare anyway

  • Keep your supporting documents and, if you applied by paper, your reference number to hand.
  • Do not book travel until you have your passport, in case an extra step delays it.
  • If you have questions, use the Passport Adviceline or the online enquiry form.

Older guides describe visits to passport interview offices. GOV.UK's pages that we checked now describe the online video interview, so rely on those.
