Lost, stolen or damaged
Cancel a lost or stolen passport straight away, then apply for a replacement.
Lost or stolen
You must cancel a lost or stolen passport as soon as possible. Cancelling quickly lowers the risk of someone misusing the passport or your identity. Use the official report service on GOV.UK; you will need a phone number, and a photocopy or photo of the passport can help you answer its questions. You can report on someone else's behalf if they cannot do it themselves.
For an adult passport you must cancel it before applying for a replacement. If you are abroad and need to travel urgently you might be able to apply for an emergency travel document, which has a fee. If you apply for one you do not need to cancel your passport beforehand, because cancellation is part of the application.
Damaged
A damaged passport must be replaced and you may not be able to travel with it. HM Passport Office treats a passport as damaged if:
- you cannot read any of your details,
- any pages are ripped, cut or missing,
- there are holes, cuts or rips in the cover,
- the cover is coming away, or
- there are stains on the pages, such as ink or water damage.
Replacing an adult passport
It costs £102 online or £115.50 on paper.
- Online: a digital photo and a credit or debit card. If your passport was lost or stolen, someone must confirm your identity online.
- Paper: a form from a Post Office or the Passport Adviceline, two new identical printed photos, and payment by card on the form or a cheque payable to HM Passport Office. Someone else must sign your form and one photo: see countersignatories.
If an interview is needed, see interviews. For a child, use the child routes on renewing; 1 Week Fast Track also covers replacements and child passports (details).
